patrickPatrick Rodgers of Smith-Kearns really helped us get a sense of mediation and how we can use it in our homes with our significant others and our kids! Mediation really is an amazing tool. As Patrick tells us, "Conflict is inevitable, but combat is optional." Certainly with Patrick's formula, we can use conflict in our homes to help us grow as a family.

If you find that your kids, you and your kids, or you and your significant other are constantly having the same argument over and over again, you may very well be stuck in a conflict trap. Here are the steps in the mediation process you can use to turn that conflict into something that will allow you to grow:
  1. Agree to work on the issue. Pick a time and a neutral place to begin the discussion.
  2. Agree on what the issue is and agree on some ground rules for the discussion.
  3. Allow each person to state his or her side of the story while the other person listens. Then each person should repeat back what they heard the person say to be sure they heard correctly.
  4. Identify areas of agreement and brainstorm all potential solutions to the conflict. Brainstorm without judgement, all ideas permitted.
  5. Establish an agreement and put it in writing.

In some instances, when the conflict feels like it is out of control, it may be necessary to contact a third party. If you find yourself in this situation, contact Patrick! Patrick may be reached at either (516) 608-0349 or (646) 290-5105. You may also visit him on the web at www.smith-kearns.com or www.limediation.li. Mention this call and Patrick will provide you with a free consultation (typically $175).
